The US Army DEVCOM Armaments Center is actively engaged in investigating and testing alternatives to Hexavalent Chrome. Hexavalent chromium plating is currently used as a protective bore coating to withstand corrosive environments and reduce wear in small arm barrels. There is a need for the development and implementation of coatings/plating for barrel bores which can perform/remain adhered under extreme temperatures, and which prevent chemical and mechanical assisted corrosion associated with small arms firing.
