The Advanced Anti-Radiation Guided Missile Extended Range (AARGM-ER) is major upgrade to AARGM system. To achieve the goals of longer range with same or better lethality a new payload (warhead and ESAF) was developed, and qualified. The AARGM-ER ESAF program included developing a discrete (no software) ESAF and simplified but equivalent fireset for arena/firing properties units. The ESAF development ensured useful status via discrete signals and a resilient packaging design that has stood up to F/A-18 and F-35 environments. A separate fireset was developed to meet the needs of three different arena test locations and to support firing properties testing. Using the fireset for firing properties of the tactical ESAF required comparative analysis per section A.5.1 of MIL-DTL-23659F Appendix A. The goal of this paper is to describe unique aspects of fuze design and development through the lens AARGM-ER. These areas of focus are:1) Design considerations of a discrete ESAF interface, 2) Importance of vibration transfer functions when designing environmental tests, 3) Considerations when and why to design a separate arena/firing properties fireset, 4) Firing properties firing unit comparative analysis.
